What’s prompting you to rethink your network?

Network upgrades often start with a recurring problem, an ageing platform or a change in the business. Select what you are seeing across your sites to explore the likely causes and what we would investigate.

We design the upgrade around what your business needs now, while allowing for new sites, applications and security requirements as the environment changes.

Site by site

Different sites need different connectivity

A warehouse, branch, clinic, project office and head office can operate on the same network without using identical connections or resilience designs.

We assess what each location needs to run, which applications are critical, what connectivity is available and how long the site could operate with a degraded or failed primary path.

A smaller site processing transactions throughout the day may need stronger failover than a larger office where employees can work around a temporary outage.

What normally matters most

A design we may start from

When the normal path fails

Likely building blocks

Each design starts from the site's own applications, constraints and carrier options.

What does this location still need to do when its normal connection is unavailable?

That answer shapes the resilience design.

Network resilience

Resilience depends on the whole network path

A secondary internet connection is only one part of a resilient design.

We also need to know whether the connections share physical infrastructure, whether the backup has enough capacity, how routing and security behave during failover, and which applications will still operate.

A link can remain online while latency, jitter or packet loss makes voice, Teams or ERP difficult to use. The design needs to account for degraded connections as well as complete outages.

Layer 1 of 7

What we check

Brownout

A brownout is a connection that remains available but performs poorly enough to affect applications. Where the platform supports it, we configure performance thresholds and eligible alternate paths so routing can respond to degradation before a complete link failure. Testing remains essential: automatic steering only helps when the alternative connection can support the affected applications.

Network connectivity

Choosing connectivity for each site

Fixed fibre and business-grade NBN services remain important foundations for multi-site networks. We also use 4G, 5G and Starlink where they suit the site's location, operating requirements or resilience needs.

The decision includes more than advertised bandwidth. We assess latency, available capacity, restoration targets, service-level commitments, physical diversity, installation lead times and the applications that must remain available.

What it gives you

We select services around the site and its requirements, using existing connections where they remain suitable.

5G and Starlink

Where 5G and Starlink fit

5G

5G can provide a secondary WAN path, temporary connectivity or an initial service while permanent circuits are being installed. It can also be useful where fixed infrastructure is limited. Before relying on it, we assess signal quality, antenna placement, local congestion, usable bandwidth, addressing requirements and performance under load.

We still design around the actual site conditions

Starlink

Starlink provides another connectivity option for regional facilities, remote operations and temporary sites where terrestrial infrastructure is limited or unavailable. We account for power requirements, sky visibility, capacity, latency, CGNAT and public IP requirements, and how the applications perform over the connection.

Construction sites

Construction and temporary project sites

Temporary project offices may need Microsoft 365, corporate applications, voice and secure network access well before a permanent fixed connection is available.

We can establish these sites using 5G or Starlink and extend the corporate network and security model into the location, with the design adjusted as the project progresses.

Carriers

Carrier choice should follow the network design

A multi-site network can use services from several carriers. The architecture does not need to be determined by a single provider's service catalogue.

We can retain an existing connection at one location, introduce a second carrier where physical path diversity matters, use 5G at another site and select Starlink where terrestrial connectivity is unsuitable.

Our responsibility is to design how those services work together, including routing, failover, security, monitoring and carrier fault coordination.

You can keep existing carrier relationships and change individual services as requirements evolve. We manage the network architecture and coordinate the connectivity needed to support it.

The carriers provide the connectivity. We make sure it works as one network.

SD-WAN

Where SD-WAN earns its place in an upgrade

SD-WAN becomes valuable when a network needs application-aware routing, resilience across different connections, consistent branch configuration and central visibility.

It is especially relevant when sites use mixed connectivity, performance varies between locations or failover needs to respond to path degradation.

What SD-WAN can add
A connection degrades while remaining online
→
Performance SLA monitoring and routing through an eligible alternative path
Teams or voice requires different treatment
→
Application-specific routing and path selection
Sites use fibre, NBN, 5G and Starlink
→
Consistent SD-WAN policy across mixed connectivity
Branch configurations have drifted
→
Central policy and configuration templates
New sites are being added
→
Repeatable deployment and provisioning
Troubleshooting happens site by site
→
Central visibility into path and application conditions
Microsoft 365 and cloud application use is increasing
→
Greater control over internet breakout and application paths

Straightforward dual-link failover can still be sufficient. We assess whether the additional routing, security and management capabilities justify SD-WAN for the environment.

Network performance

Network performance goes beyond bandwidth

Adding bandwidth does not resolve poor routing, packet loss, application inspection delays or unnecessary backhaul.

We investigate latency, jitter, loss, application paths and the location of the services your team uses. Microsoft 365, Teams, ERP and cloud platforms may each have different performance requirements.

During an upgrade, we determine which traffic should use local internet breakout, which applications still need central routing, and where application-specific steering will improve consistency.

Network security

Network and security should evolve together

Changing WAN connectivity changes how traffic reaches applications and where security controls need to operate.

Local internet breakout affects firewall inspection and web security. Segmentation must remain effective when paths change. Remote workers and contractors also need secure access to applications without relying only on the branch network.

We design routing, firewalls, segmentation, cloud access, identity and logging as connected parts of the environment. The architecture can combine products from several vendors where that suits the environment.

Platforms

Fortinet and Cisco Meraki

We design, deploy and manage networks using Fortinet and Cisco Meraki, with experience across SD-WAN, firewalls, routing, switching, wireless and centralised network management.

Fortinet

Integrated SD-WAN and security

Fortinet provides integrated SD-WAN and security through FortiGate, with FortiManager supporting central configuration and policy management and FortiAnalyzer providing logging, analytics and reporting. We use FortiAIOps and host FortiManager in Australian data centres, including Equinix and NEXTDC.

Cisco Meraki

Cloud-managed networking

We design and manage Cisco Meraki environments across branch connectivity, SD-WAN, switching, wireless and security, using its cloud-managed platform.

Existing platforms

Keep what works

An upgrade can retain suitable equipment and platforms. We assess their capacity, support status, configuration and integration requirements before recommending replacement.

Network migration

How we migrate a live multi-site network

A successful rollout depends on accurate site information, carrier coordination, staged configuration and testing before production changes.

We organise deployments around the site's applications, existing connections, trading requirements and agreed change windows.

    At national scale

The technology is only one part of the rollout. Carrier lead times, site preparation, standard configuration, scheduling, validation and rollback determine whether the programme can progress safely across the estate.

    Working with internal IT

Your IT team stays in control

We work with internal IT teams on the design, deployment and operation of multi-site networks.

Your team can retain architecture decisions, management access, change authority, vendor relationships and day-to-day administration. We provide network and security engineering, deployment resources, carrier coordination, monitoring and specialist escalation according to the agreed responsibilities.

We complete the upgrade, provide documentation and hand normal operation back to your team.

    Co-managed

We share responsibilities with internal IT, including technical changes, monitoring and complex troubleshooting.

    Ongoing management

We continue managing the network after deployment, including monitoring, carrier coordination, policy changes, reporting and lifecycle management.

The arrangement is defined before handover so that responsibilities and escalation paths are clear.

    The next stage

Plan for cloud, SASE and Zero Trust

A multi-site network upgrade can establish the foundation for better cloud access, stronger branch security and more consistent access controls for people working outside the office.

SASE or ZTNA may be part of the immediate project or a later stage. We assess how the network, security policies, identity systems and access requirements should develop together.

    FAQ

Questions we get asked about multi-site network upgrades

    Do we need SD-WAN?

Some sites only need a primary connection and a properly engineered backup. SD-WAN is useful when application steering, multiple eligible paths, central policy and network-wide visibility solve a specific operational requirement.

We already have backup internet. What would you review?

We check physical and carrier diversity, usable backup bandwidth, routing and failover behaviour, application continuity and whether the backup has been tested under realistic conditions.

Do all our sites need the same design?

No. We establish consistent security, management and operational standards while allowing connectivity and resilience to vary according to each location.

Can we keep our current carriers?

Yes. We assess existing connections and retain services that meet the requirements. Other carriers or access technologies can be introduced where needed.

Where do 4G, 5G and Starlink fit?

They can provide backup connectivity, alternative physical paths or initial connectivity at regional, remote and temporary sites. Their suitability depends on coverage, capacity, latency, addressing and the applications in use.

Can we keep our current firewalls or Cisco Meraki environment?

Yes, provided the equipment and platform can meet the target design, security and support requirements. An upgrade does not automatically mean replacing the existing estate.

    Who keeps management access?

Your IT team can retain management visibility, access and change authority. We agree these responsibilities as part of the operating model.

Can you deploy while our sites remain operational?

We stage and test the design before each migration, schedule production cutovers after hours, and agree validation and rollback procedures. We assess what can operate in parallel at each site and plan for any change-window risks.

What happens if our existing MPLS contracts have not expired?

We account for carrier terms and available overlap during the migration. MPLS can remain in use where needed, with retirement planned after the replacement paths have been validated.

Can you help with carrier selection and installation?

Yes. We assess service availability, physical-path diversity, lead times, restoration targets and commercial requirements, then coordinate provisioning and installation with the relevant providers.

    Can the project be financed?

We can arrange financing for hardware, licensing and implementation where a monthly payment structure is appropriate.
