Whether a FortiGate on an end-of-support list needs action depends on which of Fortinet’s lifecycle dates the model has reached, the FortiOS releases it can run and what the device protects in your network.

The FortiGate lifecycle, in order
Fortinet’s hardware lifecycle runs through three dates, and each answers a different question.
End of Order
Can I still buy this model new?
End of Order is the last date the product can be ordered from Fortinet. The model may stop being sold years before support ends.
A model past End of Order can stay in service for years while its cover is current.
Last Service Extension
Can I still extend the support I already have?
The last day Fortinet accepts an extension to an eligible support or security-service contract for the model, 12 months before End of Support.
After it, the unit keeps only the cover it already has.
End of Support
Does Fortinet still support the hardware?
The last date in the hardware lifecycle. After it, Fortinet no longer provides support services for the product.
For a firewall carrying production traffic, this is the date to have the replacement in place by.

A FortiGate can still be within its hardware support life but unable to run a newer FortiOS branch. Fortinet lists the 100E, 101E and 100EF with FortiOS 7.2 as their final supported branch.
FortiOS 7.2 reached standard End of Support on 30 September 2026. Extended support to 31 March 2028 applies only to eligible devices covered by FortiCare Elite.

Security
After hardware End of Support, there is no longer a supported remediation path through Fortinet for the device.
Hardware replacement
If the unit fails, there’s no hardware replacement to claim, so what would have been a routine RMA becomes an unplanned purchase and migration.
Recovery
A configuration backup only helps if compatible hardware is available to restore it onto.
Plan the replacement now, as both the security and outage risks are high.
The same date can mean very different things for a head-office firewall and a lab unit.
What should you do with the device?
The checker points to the outcome that fits the model’s lifecycle position: leave it, extend cover, plan the replacement or replace it.
E-series to the current G-series
The G-series is Fortinet’s current replacement generation. Check a model above and its family is highlighted here.
Each card above is a replacement family covering several models: a 60E maps to the 70G and a 61E to the 71G, both inside the 70G family. The checker and the individual model pages give the exact target for a specific device, which also depends on the interfaces, performance and services in use. Fortinet publishes further models in the range, including the 71G, 91G, 121G, 200G, 201G, 700G and 701G.

2 GB FortiGate?
Fortinet has removed or restricted a number of proxy-related features on 2 GB models in newer FortiOS releases. The affected models and features vary by FortiOS branch, so the current Fortinet release notes should be checked before an upgrade. This is particularly relevant to older 60E, 80E and 90E environments.

Common questions
Is FortiGate EOL the same as End of Support?
EOL is often used loosely for a product’s overall retirement, while Fortinet splits the hardware lifecycle into End of Order, Last Service Extension Date and End of Support. This checker uses Fortinet’s individual dates.
What is FortiGate End of Support?
It’s the last date in Fortinet’s hardware lifecycle for a model. After it, Fortinet no longer provides support services, including hardware replacement, for that product.
What is the Last Service Extension Date?
It’s the last day Fortinet accepts an extension to an eligible existing support or security-service contract for the model, set 12 months before End of Support.
My FortiGate is already past End of Support. How urgent is it?
That depends on what the firewall does. A unit terminating internet or VPN traffic, or protecting a site with no spare, should be replaced promptly, while a lab unit, spare or device behind another control can be recorded and scheduled for replacement.
Can I extend support and keep the firewall?
Yes, if the existing contract is eligible and the model’s Last Service Extension Date hasn’t passed. After that date Fortinet won’t accept an extension, and the unit keeps only the cover it already has.
What is happening to FortiOS 7.2?
FortiOS 7.2 reached standard End of Support on 30 September 2026.
Fortinet's extended support runs to 31 March 2028 for eligible devices covered by FortiCare Elite. Essential and Premium entitlements do not receive that extended period.
Hardware compatibility is separate: some older FortiGates cannot move beyond FortiOS 7.2.
What is Fortinet TradeUp?
TradeUp is Fortinet’s program for moving eligible hardware to a current model, often with discounted replacement hardware and the transfer of eligible remaining services. Eligibility depends on the device, the replacement path and the program terms at the time, so we confirm it against the serial number when we price the upgrade.
What is FortiConverter?
FortiConverter converts an existing FortiGate configuration for a replacement FortiGate. Fortinet currently provides a no-cost opt-in FortiGate-to-FortiGate conversion licence for eligible target devices that aren’t already entitled, though specialised customisations and advanced configuration work are excluded.
My FortiGate is still supported. Should I replace it?
Not if it’s doing its job. If the hardware is supported, it can run the FortiOS release you need and it isn’t creating an operational risk, record the dates and leave it in service. For a broader review of configuration, resilience and security posture, see our FortiGate firewall services.
